It's not a secret that car paint is easily scratched. Have you ever set a bag of groceries on the roof, hood, or trunk lid and then slid it off? You've seen the results: immediate scratches.
But don't freak out. You may remove these paint marks yourself in under an hour and at the cost of under $30. To determine if the scratches are suitable for this DIY repair, test your finger through the mark. If your fingernail glides across the scratch and doesn't get caught, it's probably a small scratch that can be polished out. However, if the scratch is caught by your fingernail, it's an opportunity for an auto body shop.
If your scratch is eligible, you can purchase sandpaper 3,000-grit rub and polishing compound polishing pads. Also, you'll need an electric drill that is portable or a Dual Action (DA) polisher. It is possible to purchase the majority of the equipment off the shelf at any auto parts shop. You can also purchase a complete kit for scratch removal.
You might have heard of the toothpaste method to remove scratches. This is only effective for small scratches. Toothpaste is as rough as 3,000-grit sandpaper and functions as polishing material. If you do not have the needed tools and equipment, it is an excellent alternative to get rid of tiny scratches.
1. Sanding off the paint scratch on the car
The scratch should be wet and use sandpaper to lightly sand the scratch until the finish appears like a dull surface and the mark is no longer visible. Clean the surface using an abrasive towel.
2. Apply the compound
Apply the compound by rubbing on the polishing pad and then distribute it with the pad. Then, run the polisher or drill at 1,200 rpm till there is a faint cloud. Then, polish the compound to restore shine.
Small scratches are enough that they can stop the fingernail's movement in our test. The scratches have dug into the surface coat. But don't worry about it; you can still take the scratches out with a few instruments and equipment. Be sure to wash your car prior to trying to get rid of the scratch. Check out the steps below.
1. Apply Scratch-Removal Product
Place a quarter-sized piece of bead on the pad for scrubbing and apply directly to the scratch. Apply the product to the scratched area and also any surrounding areas.
2. Clean up the remnants
Remove any dirt with the help of a microfiber towel.
3. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times
It's safe to use this procedure a couple of times. There might be a slight improvement with the scratches after attempting the method once, but it hasn't disappeared completely. Give it a few more sessions, and the scratches will become more difficult to detect.
